Five Ways to Deal with Better Performers

Bangalore : In today’s business world, fresher’s from top management schools, who onboard an organization are already armed with strategies that one can acquire with years of experience. Therefore it’s advisable by industry experts to the boss’ not to fear such juniors who are more talented than you. Devina Sengupta of The Economic Times, explained how one can deal with better performers.

1.Distribute Responsibilities:-You should always distribute the responsibilities to the talented employees equally. Bhuvaneswar Naik, Vice President , Human Resources, SAP Labs India said “I do not know 40 percent of what happens on the ground. It is impossible to know everything that takes place in the office. This is where a group of good subordinates help, since they keep you upto speed,” It also helps the firm build leadership capabilities he added Most importantly, the head should realise that it is okay not to know everything . This belief will allay all fears,” says Bhuvaneswar. According to bhuwaneshwar it is not possible for the boss to know everything that is happening in the organization therefore he should distribute responsibilities to the talented employees as they can help him to get informed about what is going on in the organization.

2.Be the Generalist:-R Elango HR head of MphasiS prefers to have juniors who are more knowledgeable in some areas of job than him because as a boss, it is important to have a general overview and look at decision making rather than get involved in every single process in the organization. If those reporting are specialists in certain business units, then it makes the boss’s work easier. he also added”It also depends on what kind of relationship you have built with your juniors. One should feed off each other’s strengths”.

3.Assign Different Projects:-CEO of Ikya Consultants Ajith Issac, expressed that a good employee who shows promise and can be roped in as the future boss is a good news for the company head. As, he added “that it indicates my recruitment policies are working and I have created an organization that attracts talent.” According to Ajith, one way of dealing with talented juniors without feeling the pressure would be to put them in different projects that would benefit them and the company as well.

4.Analyse Yourself :-Srinivas Nanduri, partner at the executive search firm, Maxima Global Executive Search says “One should be open to bite the bullet and throw open the door for the boss to do some introspection,” because a better performer who is a rung or two lower can indicate the boss needs to do a bit of introspection one cannot compare the responsibilities of a boss with those of a junior, since the deliverables are different, but the introspection will help the boss take a better approach to work.According to Srinivas Nanduri a boss should be ready to face competition with his talented subordinates so that he can be competitive with his subordinates.

5.Give Guidance:-The boss whose junior is a better performer should know that the chair is not just occupied by experts. It needs a certain kind of experience, management skills and the ability to react to situations that are unrelated to the job profile.
